Astragal:

Back Band:

Decorative moulding used on the back side of door and window trim to give a wider look.

Back Relief:

Cuts on the back side of flooring or moulding to help prevent cupping and ease of installation.

Stair parts vertical posts used to support the handrail or banister between main posts.

Banister:

Also known as handrail

Bar Rail:

Decorative railing on either side of a bar for comfort and prevent items from being pushed off.

Base: (Baseboard)

Decorative moulding installed on the wall next to the floor. Baseboards should be chosen to work in harmony with your casings to finish and tie the room together. Baseboards are usually thinner than the casing.

Base Cap:

Decorative moulding installed on top of the baseboard.

Base Shoe:

Base shoes are primarily used to trim flooring materials and are often used in combination with a tradtional baseboard to conceal variations between the flooring and the base. However, this versatile profile works great to solve numerous trimming needs.

Battens:

Decorative mouldings used to cover joints or just for decoration.

Bead Center Bead:

Paneling face knife gives decorative look to wall paneling with 2 beads.

Beaded Paneling:

Same as above only beaded on 1 edge only.

Birds Eye:

Knot configuration found in some woods (Maple, Pine) fairly rare but desirable.

Brickmoulds:

Brickmoulds are used as exterior casing around doors 2" is the most common size.

Bullnose: A term used to describe the eased edges of trim and stops. A single bull nose stop would have one eased edge and a square edge back. A double bull nose stop would have two eased edges.

Carbide Steel:

Type of knife steel required to cut MDF materials and very abrasive woods (Teak, Anigre).

Casing:

Casings define the overall character of of a room and are often the most visable part of the trim. Casings are used primarily to cover the gap between the drywall and the door or window frame. Casings are generally thicker than the base moulding.

Filler used to cover minor gaps between mouldings and finished walls.

Chair Rail:

Chair rails have a decorative and practical function. Applied to a wall anywhere from 24 to 48 inches from the floor, they are a beauftiful accent to the room, while also protecting the wall from scruffs and dents from the backs of chairs.

A beveled edge on any moulding usually 45° (degree).

Chatter Marks:

A flaw in manufacturing that is visible on the surface of mouldings.

A flaw in wood that creates checks or cracks in lumber. Usually caused by improper drying.

Decorative block, usually square used on top and bottom corners of door and window trim.

This profile has a wide range of uses, it is most commonly used to soften the transition on inside corners.

Crowns usually run along the wall at the ceiling. Crowns come in a wide range of sizes and patterns. Crowns soften the transition from wall to ceiling while adding a distinctive look and charm to most rooms.

A curve in wood that runs across a board that comes from drying or storage conditions.

Dado:

A groove cut in wood usually with square corners.

A moulding pattern with a series of closely spaced rectangular blocks and spaces. Used especially in classic architecture.

Grinding wheel required to cut carbide knife steel into moulding profiles or sharpening.

The frame around the Door.

Decorative moulding used on top of door and window jambs different from the casing.

Moulding used on interior flat door jambs that is used to close the gap around a door.

Similar to an exterior jamb except that there is a rabbett on both edges of the jamb to create a solid stop on an interior door.
