Knotty Alder (Green) Facts

Red Alder (Alnus rubra Bong.) is a member of the Birch Family and grows mainly within 100 miles of the West Coast from Southern California to British Columbia.

Prior to the turn of the 20th century, there were sporatic groves of Alder in these areas.

The immense Alder Forests of today were created by logging in the 1920's that cleared vast areas of heavily wooded land.

Alder, is natures "REBUILDER" of logged areas, forest fires, and any of the areas that are depleted of trees.

It is the first plant to establish itself in these areas and grows extremely fast (Weed like). It will reach a height of over 80 ft and diameter of 11" in 30 years or less.

The Alders have a maximum age of about 100 years, so these are no "OLD GROWTH" Alder trees.

Because of these regenerations and fast growth, Alder at this time is not recognised as a hardwood that is certified by FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council).

We can feel good about the continued and expanded use of Red Alder Products, because it reduces the demand for
